In the past couple of years, I've only gone to BH with either a flat tire, or to change rims, so I can only speak to that. Waiting outside to be helped was not a problem, and the staff were friendly, service was quick.
Eric was super helpful, professional, and straightforward with me. He fixed my derailleur on a busy Saturday and I felt super comfortable the whole time. Thank you so much!

The staff is very knowledgeable but can come off as condescending - not everyone who wants to buy a bike knows all about bikes. It makes me less motivated to spend a lot of money at your shop if basic questions get a flippant answer.
I like the neighborhood vibe of the store.

Matt was incredible! I am very new to biking, and he took the time to answer all my questions; he was incredibly patient and made me feel very comfortable. He did a bike fit and tuned up my bike to ensure it was properly adjusted to fit me perfectly. I chose this bike store because of the fantastic reviews I found online, and my experience went above and beyond what I was expecting! He even kept my bike overnight to fix some issues from the manufacturer and then stayed after hours the next day to let me pick it up since I didn't have time during store hours to come.
Staff is so attentive. Answered all my questions. Let me try two different stem extenders till I got the right fit for my bike. I got mine next bike at your shop.
Not much actually, esp in an urban sales location. The store is packed with both new and repair bikes and the atmosphere is less than "attractive." But that said: the whole reason I went is you had a bike I wanted (Specialized Sirrus X 5.0 in blue, not orange), the sale went perfectly, the bike was assembled next day, and the sales staff cordially offered accessories without too much oversell. I had perhaps the best quicky saddle height adjustment ever and after swapping the pedals the next day, it feels right!
So from a pure buyers perspective, it is a 10.
From a walk-in perspective? My recommendation -- and I am NOT a professional in this space! -- is differentiate the sales floor from the repair floor.

The BEST staff! Always so nice, helpful and knowledgable.
(1) BH tuned up my bike in December and I didn't ride it a whole lot between then and April, but when I brought my bike in recently there were a whole lot of things wrong with the bike. Was the tune up in December incomplete and, if so, why?
(2) I specifically stated that I needed my bike back before 6pm on Monday. It was not ready when I called at little before 6 on Monday and I never got a call that it was ready.
The young woman behind the counter was super-friendly and super-competent. I needed a flat tire replaced and it was done quickly and cheaply.
Matt is the absolute best. I cross town to get service from you guys because the culture is constructive and helpful and energetic. So much better than other NYC bike shops.
