Very good
Great energy from the instructors. My kids want to go to swimming lessons. They enjoy playing in the water.
My son Abel has the most amazing instructor. My son is on the autism spectrum and has sensory processing disorder. He has always been terrified of water and has gone through many therapies. We recently just got him to start using a hand held shower head to take a shower. He stated that he wanted to try the pool so I signed him up for classes. This was his first experience with the pool. He won’t even play at the splash park or the water table at daycare. His instructor was so patient, kind and encouraging. First class she got him in the water up to his neck. Second class she was able to get him to swim while holding on to her. Today she got him to dunk his head. He was so excited and proud. So am I! I’m holding back tears just writing this. Thank you for this amazing opportunity for my sweet boy.
The emphasis on safety
Great instructors, will recommend!
The family locker room and the teachers.
Friendly fun instructors. Their warmth makes my young kids more comfortable and willing to be brave to try new things.
Very professional and friendly
Great staff
The Lakewood YMCA swim lessons are outstanding. The level of service and quality of instruction is above expectations! It really boils down to a few things - leadership is present and always working to improve instructors. Destiny and Yasuko are on deck helping parents, instructors and kids. I’ve seen destiny jump right in and ask what staff want to be trained on a certain level. Their presence and attitude flow to the staff. I am blown away at how engaged and trained the aquatic staff are. Especially the younger employees (HS and college age) who are getting a good foundation for their future careers/employment. The levels are consistent (kids are in the right classes) and the directors have no issues moving kids to the right levels or confronting parents that their child is in the wrong level. Each level is being taught the right skills and kids are being challenged. We take lessons regularly at three Y’s (Lakewood, Sumner and Puyallup) and I recommend Lakewood to anyone that will listen!! It’s the furthest from us but I will hands down drive out there because lessons are so good!
Great teachers
The instrustors are patient with students and teach at a good speed.
The scheduling is easy, lots of class options, and teachers are great.
Great teachers
Ms Sally is a great instructor. My kids absolutely love learning how to swim from her. She’s very patient and kind with all the kids.
The teachers are wonderful. My kids look forward to the lessons each week.
It would be nice if the level 1 classes could have 2 teachers. The kids who are typically in level 1 (ages 3-5) tend to have a short attention span and get ancy quickly. With 2 teachers, managing kids’ behavior would be easier as the kids won’t be sitting and waiting their turn so long. I’ve noticed the kids get bored quickly and start misbehaving, which causes safety hazards. Its hard for 1 teacher to manage behavior while also teaching kiddos to swim.
Most of my kids learned to swim here. It's wonderful that it's included in the price, just like gymnastics (and used to have taekwondo). It's one of the main reasons we maintain our membership.
They are well run, good instruction. Sometimes lower levels have more. Than optimal numbers enrolled, but higher levels are good!
Family friendly. Lots of programs and activities: lessons, teams. Equipment is in good shape and well maintained.
Friendly staff!
Lots of activity and things to chose from!
I particularly enjoy the swimming area, especially water aerobics
close to home and variety of equipment
Appreciate the encouragement from staff and patrons
Friendly staff and atmosphere. Being warmly greeted as I walk in. There’s a chapel! And a cafe! Variety of exercise classes. I particularly enjoy aqua aerobics.
I love that the morning staff is so amazing and genuine.
Multi generational, multi cultural. Clean and well kept. Friendly staff. Plenty of programs for all members who are mostly supportive across cultures and generations. A microcosm of how we ought to live in the world outside those walls.
I particularly like the aquatics programs.
I like everything
People are friendly, place is clean, lots of equipment. Good class options, too.

We have loved the YMCA’s swim lessons! My son has been taking them for a couple of years now, and he continues to enjoy them and learns from his incredible instructors with each new session. Plus, it’s incredibly affordable when compared to other swim lessons in the area, and we’re able to sign him up for additional activities/sports each session, which are included in the price of the overall membership.
