Experienced, welcoming instructors. Melissa immediately made us feel welcome and is organized and clear. I loved seeing her work with children--she has a calm demeanor that eases scared little ones. I observed them many times relaxing under her guidance and learning along with her.
Our child was placed in Kamaki's group on the first day, and I was impressed with him to say the least. He loves what he does, and I was grateful to see his respect for and ability to communicate with the kids. He looks each child in the eye and greets them as humans with individual needs and personalities. My child was a little nervous, but after getting in the water with him and him talking to her with such awareness and sensitivity, she warmed up and had a great experience.
Kamaki's demeanor with this students has had an impact on me! I'm also a teacher and seeing how he handled a few situations has affected how I think about my classroom. One of the children in the group was splashing my child intentionally, and after repeated kind requests to not splash others from Kamaki, Kamaki calmly placed himself between the splashing child and my child and continued the instruction, thus effectively ending the distracting behavior. During that 30-minute session, the child who was splashing also yelled in Kamaki's ear a couple of times, and grabbed Kamaki's face and squeezed hard. In every instance, Kamaki remained calm, asserting a leadership role but with utter respect and kindness for the child. After the last hard-squeeze-to-the-face moment, Kamaki gave the child a choice that was worded with such kindness. I wish I could remember verbatim what he said, but it was along the lines of, "it looks like you are not as interested in the lesson right now. Would you like to go back with your parents or would you like to continue with the lesson?" And the child calmed down and was attentive the rest of the session.
I shared these observations with a new teacher at my institution who was having a hard time with a disruptive student, and now we occasionally remind each other to channel Kamaki!

The staff are very supportive and friendly. I went for rehab after a health issue and developed a network of friends. The ymca is a very good support outlet.
