What do you like about your Tom Taylor Family YMCA experience?

Good morning,
There are groups who walk while socializing, taking up all lanes of the track. This morning, while my boot camp class was running in the outside "run" lane, a man who was walking with a group taking all lanes of the track intentionally impeded members of our class in the outside "run" lane even as they said "excuse me" while approaching. He heard them, stepped into their way in the "run" lane and said "excuse you!" My 17 year old daughter had to stop quickly and squeeze between him and the wall to get by while his friend yelled at her to "stay out of the jog lane." Other members of our class witnessed this and asked him to move out of the way. This man and his companion have done this same thing to my 17 and 16 year old daughters multiple times over a few weeks.

After class, i talked with Instructor Mike and Manager Art about my concerns for this particular man targeting my daughters. The man saw me, and came over to us confrontationally and said "I assume this is about me?" I said yes and that I do not like how their group impedes all of the runners in our class, and my daughters in particular. He said "stay out of the walk lane then." I said we do not run in the walk lane and that since he is walking, he needs to stay in the walk lane so nobody runs into anyone else. He said "if anyone is close to the walk or jog lane I could just stick out my foot and trip someone very easily." I take this as an insinuation that he is considering doing just that- tripping someone- and i am concerned about someone getting injured.

At the beginning of every boot camp class when we will be running, our instuctors Mike and Joe make a point to the whole class to remember to stay in the outside "run" lane, be polite, and watch out for other people using the track. We run single file in the outside lane, occasionally using the jog lane to pass each other when clear. When groups using all lanes are in our way, i do say "excuse me" and ask them to stay in the walk lane. I have not been nicely recieved by some of these people.

Running between sets is an important part of keeping our heart rates up as part of our workout plan. In the past, when the group of women who walk 3 abreast and take the whole track have complained about us, our instructors avoid trouble by not having us run for a while. The workouts are not as effective when this happens. There is enough room for all of us when everyone follows the rules the Y has established.

I have been attending this wonderful class for 11 years. It has brought me from being flabby after having 4 babies to being in good enough shape to be a career firefighter participating in the Columbia Stairclimb yesterday. This class is for people at all levels of their fitness journey, and I started bringing my teenage daughters last summer. As we began having problems with this particular man, I figured this was a good way for my very polite daughters to practice sticking up for themselves and standing their ground. I thought a firm "excuse me" would help but it has not, and now that he is suggesting the possibility of tripping someone I am concerned for everyone's safety.

I would suggest some sort of enforcement or emphasis to help remind people to stay in the correct lanes on the track. Maybe a suggestion that walkers that want to use the whole space so they can socialize move to treadmills or exercise bikes.

Thank you for reading my concerns, i wanted management to be informed of what has been an ongoing issue in an otherwise wonderful community organization.

I love the early mwf boot camp class. Also, i sent a previous feedback message about stairclimber machines, and soon after the y got a whole bunch more. Much appreciated.

What do you like about Swim Lessons at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA?

Can be well instructed, organized. Currently the level 5 instructor is not good. Children are swimming into each other, getting kicked and hit with zero interest from said instructor, she turns her back often and plays with other employees whenever possible. When jumping from the podium children jump at the wall every single time. Never instructed to jump straight forward. Every other instructor seems to be focused on their job. She is the poor exception.

We have two daughters, 3 years and 8 months. We have been participating in YMCA swim classes for a very long time. My girls love it so much and we have watched them fall in love with the water and become comfortable in the pool. Elle is absolutely amazing. She is the best swim instructor and deeply cares about their progress and comfort level.

The swim lessons are done in such a way that the kids are very much at ease and not scared or in distress. Our son particularly was a little skiddish of the water, but he has come such a long way with the gentle guidance of the Y swim instructors, especially with Ely. Our Calvin seems to be so comfortable with Miss Ely that he's able to concentrate on the actual swimming part, so it's worked out so great for us.

One last piece of feedback is that we found the regular classes might have had too many kids, so it was hard for the kids to get much time learning some of the time just because there were usually so many kids in the class. But the private lessons provide such a different environment for our son that helps him much more.

Both my kids are in school age lessons, and WOW what a great experience! Minimal waiting on the side of the pool, great teachers who are very engaged in educating the kids about the strokes. My girls love their swim lessons in “the big pool” !

What do you like about your Tom Taylor Family YMCA experience?

It's a great facility; lots of cardio machines; so, I don't have to wait for one; lots of weights, but I do have to wait sometimes to use some of the cyber(I believe that's what they are called) exercise machines at the time I come, which is around 5:30 pm during the week. The staff at the front desk are wonderful-they are friendly, happy, and helpful. They greet you with a friendly smile when you check in and say have a great day when you leave.

Small class size, lots of options. But I wish classes for little kids weren’t offered in the lap pool - too cold.

What do you like about Swim Lessons at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA?

I love the variety of lesson times and days available to choose from as I like to coordinate with the gymnastics program and do both programs in one trip. The instructors are kind and my usually slow to warm-up 3yo quickly warms up to them as he has learned they are safe and kind. My 3yo would like to add that he likes "chop, chop, timber!" :)
