Sadly, it will do no good to recommend the BEST YMCA in Indianapolis to a friend because misguided managers plan to close it. This hurts the community.
The Y at the Athenaeum is unique. A historical building, fabulous staff, good machines, great group exercise classes & instructors, phenomenal personal trainers and a true sense of community among members. Many of us walk to this location and live downtown so we can walk places instead of drive. Many of us will NOT be going to City Way when the Athenaeum location closes. I currently walk 1.2 miles to this Y. To get to City Way I would have to either take a bus and walk a few blocks or walk 2.5 miles. If the Athenaeum maintains a wellness center I will go there. The Y top management is extremely misguided
This location has some of the best classes which I drive further to attend. The staff is great and the people here know each other, they talk and catch up before class starts which you do not see at many other YMCA or gym locations.

Your location is what is key for me
The group fitness classes at this location are great, with lots of options for both times a class type, and fantastic instructors. I attend after work multiple times per week and regularly see the same people, and it really brings a sense of community that I was struggling to find when I attending the Irsay location.
Unfortunately, I don't have time for the programs and activities. I barely have time for the bare minimum cardio.

You provide a sense of community in addition to a place to work out. Please don’t close a place where people feel belonging in a time when that is so hard to find.

Ironic that I should get this request for feedback just after I received email announcing that the YMCA is closing the Athenaeum.
I absolutely would recommend the Athenaeum over all other Y’s in town.

I love the in person classes! The A YMCA is just such a nice and friendly facility. Everyone says hello and is friendly. I appreciate the bow dryer and qtips available in the bathroom. I joined the Y in January after several years without a membership and I’m so happy to be back!
The equipment selection is perfect for our needs…
