Member Testimonials
Great for kids and adults of all ages
I love the staff here especially Brandie and Deborah. They have the largest variety of weight training equipment that I have ever seen in a gym anywhere. The facility is spotless from the bathrooms to the pool to the indoor track The classes are fun and exciting. I have so much fun I actually forget I am working out. This YMCA is more than a gym it is a family and definitely gives everyone that comes here a sense of belonging in this community in Roanoke VA.
I like the water aerobic classes, wellness center, track, and the availability of personal trainers. There are also some very pleasant membership desk employees.
So much variety
I loved everything about the Y! Especially the people!
I enjoy the classes
Exercise classes with Sarah are EXCELLENT.
Forever Fit and Chair Yoga.
Expanded pickleball courts.
Great location
Family atmosphere and caring staff, especially the front desk and lifeguards. The love for the senior citizens to the toddlers is Awesome. I recommend the Kirk Family YMCA for all, the groups and activities available will surely make you feel better mentally and physically when you leave there. Once you get to know staff and members it's like being at home away from home. The motivation from staff is a blessing from just having someone to talk to or pushing you to do one more lap or whatever exercise you are doing. All programs and classes are scheduled perfectly and the instructors are patient with beginners to experienced clients.
There's plenty of room throughout the facility to utilize. Lots of weight equipment.
What I love most about the YMCA is the variety of exercise classes and the Y is built to include family. My kids get to enjoy programs made for them while I enjoy a good workout or a walk around the track.
I like the mix of people at the Y, different economic groups, ethnicities, ages all thrown together without favor. I like the kindness and happy faces I see there, plus, of course, the great instructors (Sarah).
I love the sauna and the free weights, especially the new platforms and soft weights.
It’s a great social environment where all types of people can meet and enjoy the atmosphere.
I just come to work out on my own.
I like the welcoming atmosphere, the helpfulness of the staff, and regular upgrades to the wide array of equipment.
Atmosphere and staff.
the childcare! the variety of classes! the wonderful staff
The facility is maintained well in terms of cleanliness, repairs, and upgrades.
Staff is courteous and friendly.
The equipment I prefer to use for my exercise routine has always been in good working order.
Diverse membership and people generally seem respectful of one another.
I like the weight room. Those overhead lights are far too bright. It would be great if the next time they were replaced it was considered that people have to look up when doing abs or bench press. But other than that, I love the Y.
I pretty much have my own work out routine, but I love the other activities, as some of my dearest friends are in them, like the 10am group on mon, wed, and Fri. It looks like seated yoga? Also I have other friends In the water exercises! I wish more of the older people that I know would get involved to see the benefits! But must of them are in their comfort zone and would just like to sit around and complain instead of getting off their butts and doing something! Lazy! Thanks for your time!
Excellent range of healthy activities enjoyed by a very friendly clientele more representative of all the ethnicities of Roanoke than any other institution. It’s a treasure.
Good staff, well kept equipment and property.
The staff are excellent, especially the early morning folks. The equipment is good and generally clean and in good repair. The space is good as well.
The first thing any YMCA visitor or member notices each time they visit the Salem Kirk Family YMCA is the staff at the Front Desk. These staff members are polite, positive and professional. Virtually any question or request a person may have is attended to quickly with a smile. Other YMCA locations should look upon Salem as a guiding light in how to run a professional staff.
The next thing any visitor or member notices is the extreme cleanliness of all parts of the facility. The cleaning staff is high competent and they too stand ready to help with special circumstances. A clean Y is a healthy Y is a happy Y. I try to make it a point to thank the individual cleaning staff members I encounter for their fine work.
Thirdly, the management of the Salem Y goes to great and continuous effort to provide a large calendar of classes and events at the Y. This continuously curated calendar is available to anyone with an internet connection on their phone, laptop, or home PC.
Fourthly - guests and related family of members of the Salem Y are treated with utmost respect and kindness. They are met with a big smile and welcomed into the facility. The Y's policy of granting X number of free visits to these new faces is both liberal and intelligent and goes a long way toward further improving the good reputation of the Salem Y in the minds of our visitors and our members.
Everything is awesome.
I use the pool, primarily. I like that the lap pool was well-ventilated and felt safe evening the early days of covid. I like the lifeguards, who are pleasant and helpful. I like the reception staff, most of whom are friendly and remember me.
I would like the locker room better if more of the showers had at least a fold-down seat, and if the swimsuit spinner worked regularly.
I especially like the water safety program for children, which is so important.
Everything
I like Masters' Swim because I have seen progress!

I like that you are again open at 5am for the family pool. This gives our family an opportunity to start swimming again before work.
We also like the many programs and activities you have to offer.
